Denver Pilot Adopts Kitten After Hurricane Rescue Flight
As a powerful hurricane barreled toward Florida, animal welfare groups knew they had little time to act. Lucky Dog Animal Rescue of Virginia and Greater Good Charities in Washington quickly partnered with Southwest Airlines to airlift nearly 150 cats and dogs out of danger, relocating them from Florida shelters to safety in Milwaukee.
The mission was urgent but filled with hope. Some animals even rode in the cabin, delighting the Southwest crew and creating an unforgettable atmosphere. For Captain Matt Prebish, the flight became more than just a rescue operation when he met a playful kitten named Avery.

The tiny passenger’s adventurous spirit captured his heart mid-flight, and by the time a weather delay extended their journey, Matt was already imagining her as part of his family. He called his wife for approval — which she happily gave — and the rescue team scrambled to finish adoption paperwork before landing.
By the end of the trip, Avery had a forever home waiting for her in Denver. For Matt, the unexpected adoption was both joyful and meaningful: he wasn’t just bringing home a new companion, but also helping make room in Florida shelters for more animals in need.
The flight highlighted the dedication of rescuers and the power of small acts of kindness. For Avery, it was a fresh start. For her pilot, it was a reminder that sometimes the most important passengers are the ones with four paws.
