With another round of high temperatures expected this weekend, Xcel Energy’s power grid will be under increased demand. Colorado’s climate, characterized by hot days and sometimes chilly nights, can stress HVAC systems. To help manage this, Xcel advises setting your thermostat around 68 degrees to keep rates lower for everyone and reduce stress on wind and solar farms and natural gas plants.

“If we get really hot days and our customers are using more energy, it strains our electric grid more and it could potentially cause a brownout or a blackout,” said Xcel spokesperson Hollie Velasquez-Horvath.

Tips to Keep Your Home Cooler and Lower Your Bill

  • Close Curtains and Blinds: During the day, keep curtains and blinds closed to block out heat.
  • Open Interior Doors: Ensure interior doors are open to allow cool air to flow through each room.
  • Run Appliances After 7:01 p.m.: Electricity rates can decrease after this time, so consider running dishwashers, washers, and dryers in the evening.

Xcel Energy Programs to Save Money

  • Saver Switch: This device can be installed on your air conditioning unit to monitor electricity use. Enrollees receive a one-time credit on their bill, averaging $40. The Saver Switch can pause the air conditioning unit when the electric system is strained, though customers cannot make adjustments unless they opt out of the program.
  • AC Rewards Program: This program allows a third-party company affiliated with Xcel to remotely monitor and control your thermostat, which is ideal for those who prefer not to make constant adjustments or do not have regular access to their thermostat.
