Is Colorado Among the States Where Hanging Things on Your Mirror Is Illegal?

Hanging items from your rearview mirror is a common way to personalize a car, from air fresheners and dream catchers to graduation tassels and good luck charms. However, what seems like a harmless decoration can actually get you pulled over in some states where laws prohibit obstructing a driver’s view.

The Legal Perspective

According to Motor Biscuit, many states have laws requiring drivers to maintain a clear and unobstructed view while driving. Anything that hangs from or is affixed to the rearview mirror that could impair visibility is considered a potential safety issue. In these cases, law enforcement officers are within their rights to pull drivers over and issue citations.

While this rule applies broadly, some states have specific laws outright banning items from being hung on rearview mirrors. According to the House Grail website, the following states have made it explicitly illegal:

  • California
  • Arizona
  • Texas
  • Pennsylvania
  • Colorado
  • Minnesota
  • New York
  • Illinois

Why the Restrictions Exist

The intention behind these laws is to reduce distractions and ensure that drivers have a clear view of the road. Even seemingly small items can block a driver’s field of vision, potentially causing accidents or creating hazardous conditions.

Enforcement Nationwide

While these eight states have strict regulations, drivers everywhere should be cautious. In any state, an officer can pull you over if they believe an item hanging from your mirror poses a safety risk. It’s a good idea to remove decorations or trinkets that might obstruct your view, even if they seem harmless.

When in doubt, it’s better to keep your dashboard and windshield clear of clutter to avoid potential tickets and ensure safer driving conditions for yourself and others on the road.
