Lakewood Safeway Closes After Decades in Business

Safeway has closed its longtime store at 9160 W. Colfax Ave. in Lakewood after decades of serving the community. The store permanently shut its doors on Saturday, August 9. Parent company Albertsons cited underperformance as the reason for the closure, noting that the decision came after ongoing evaluations of store performance.

In a statement, a Safeway spokesperson said the company will work to transfer affected employees to other Safeway locations in the Denver metro area. “While closing this location was not an easy decision, we remain committed to growing our business and reinvesting resources into existing Safeway stores across Colorado,” the spokesperson said.

The Lakewood store had been winding down operations for weeks, offering steep discounts of 50–90% to clear remaining inventory. The closure marks the end of a long-running neighborhood grocery option that had been part of the Colfax corridor for generations.

This closure is part of a larger trend in the grocery industry. Another major chain, King Soopers, will soon close its store at 5050 E. Arapahoe Rd. in Centennial on August 16. Kroger, King Soopers’ parent company, announced plans to shutter around 60 underperforming stores nationwide over an 18-month period, a process that was delayed during its failed merger attempt with Albertsons.
