Elon Musk Might Dig Denver a Tunnel So You Don’t Have to Fight Ball Arena Crowds

A proposal to build an underground pedestrian tunnel near Ball Arena in Denver is gaining national attention after being named a finalist in a competition hosted by Elon Musk’s The Boring Company. According to Fox31, the “Ball Arena Tunnel” is one of just 16 projects selected out of nearly 500 submissions in the company’s “Tunnel Vision” contest, which aims to identify innovative solutions to real-world transportation challenges.

The Denver concept would create a roughly 330-foot pedestrian tunnel connecting Ball Arena directly to a nearby RTD light rail station. Currently, fans and commuters rely on an above-ground bridge to cross train tracks in the area, which can be congested and less convenient, especially during large events.

Kroenke Sports & Entertainment, which operates Ball Arena, says the project is still in its early stages and it has not yet been decided whether future development will include a tunnel, a bridge, or both. Still, being selected as a finalist puts Denver in the running for a potentially groundbreaking project that The Boring Company has offered to build at no cost.

The idea mirrors similar infrastructure already in place in Las Vegas, where underground tunnels transport passengers in Tesla vehicles to help bypass surface-level traffic. While Denver’s version would be designed specifically for pedestrians, the goal remains the same — improving access, safety and overall flow in a busy entertainment district.

Reactions from the public have been largely positive, with many saying the tunnel could make it easier to navigate the area and safer to travel at night. Whether the project ultimately moves forward will depend on the competition’s final outcome, which is expected to be announced March 23.
