Potential Denver Broncos Head Coach Candidate May Bring Franchise Quarterback to Denver

With three regular-season games remaining, the Denver Broncos are at 7-8. In spite of their poor playoff chances, the Broncos’ underperformance in 2021 has led to speculation that the team may part ways with head coach Vic Fangio at the end of the year

NFC East head coaches Dan Quinn of the Cowboys, Jonathan Gannon of the Eagles, and Scott Turner of the Washington Redskins are making the list of rumored potential candidates for the head coach position.

Darrell Bevell, the interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars and offensive coordinator, is also on the list, as is Leslie Frazier, the former offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. It’s possible that Quinn might bring a franchise quarterback to Denver with him.

Quinn Is An Intriguing Option For Denver, and he might be joined by Russell Wilson

Speculation has it that Denver’s Quinn could be the man to take over from Fangio as the team’s coach.

Quinn, like the Broncos’ current head coach, is a defensive-minded individual. In addition to his time as Seattle Seahawks DC during the Legion of Boom period, Quinn has a lengthy coaching career that includes stints as head coach of both the Atlanta Falcons and the Seattle Seahawks.

Quinn, the Cowboys’ current defensive coordinator, is known for his opportunistic and attacking style of defense. After 15 weeks of play, the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts are tied for first place in the NFL in forced turnovers (31) and interceptions (12).

Even though the Dallas Cowboys are among the top nine NFL teams in terms of passing yards surrendered, they have only allowed 18 touchdown passes, which ranks them fifth in the league. The Dallas Cowboys’ defense is also tied for the NFL lead in keeping opposing offenses off the field, according to Pro Football Reference’s stats.

To help the Broncos replace their most critical void, a franchise quarterback, Quinn might be brought to Denver.

Russell Wilson, the current quarterback of the Seattle Seahawks, is reportedly willing to waive his no-trade clause in order to join the Denver Broncos, as reported by NFL source Jordan Schultz on December 8.

Adding Quinn would improve Denver’s chances of securing Wilson, according to a piece by SI.com’s Erick Trickel on November 23.

As Trickle pointed out, “Hiring Quinn to replace Fangio would also serve as a major recruiting tool to encourage Seahawks QB Russell Wilson, who has a no-trade provision in his contract,” to move to Denver. As a result, even though Quinn isn’t the offensive-minded coach most Broncos would like to have, the move to Denver makes a lot of sense. Do the math. Quinn and Wilson are close friends. Quinn’s ties to the Broncos extend to current GM George Paton.

Quinn became one of the most appealing head coaching candidates in the NFL in 2014. According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio on January 3, 2015, Quinn had attention from multiple NFL teams requiring a head coach but hoped to partner up with Paton as GM/HC.

To end up in Atlanta, Quinn helped lead the Falcons to the Super Bowl in just his second season as head coach.

Quinn led the Falcons for six seasons, finishing 43-42 until being sacked after Week 5 of the 2020 season. Many in Atlanta, including SI.com’s Conor Orr on October 11, 2020, believed the Falcons’ woes weren’t all Quinn’s fault.

By all accounts, he was the same coach that led the squad on a last-gasp 6-2 run last season. “He led the team to one of its two Super Bowls,” Orr wrote. “This was the individual who was willing to put in the daily effort to overcome the terrible Super Bowl loss to the Patriots.”
