Starting Thursday, union workers at King Soopers stores in the Denver metro area and across the Front Range will go on strike, following months of unsuccessful negotiations with the grocery chain. The strike will affect 77 stores, with about 10,000 workers participating. The United Food & Commercial Workers Union Local 7 pointed to several issues, including a lack of response from King Soopers regarding information on staffing and pricing. Although King Soopers expressed respect for the right to strike, the company emphasized that it will continue operating, and employees who choose to remain on the job will be welcomed.

The union’s concerns were exacerbated when the contract extension expired in January, removing the no-strike clause. This led to a vote for the strike after negotiations between King Soopers and the union since October failed to reach an agreement. The dispute has centered on key issues such as inadequate financial and staffing data provided by the company. The strike is expected to last for two weeks, though a previous strike in 2022 lasted nine days before an agreement was reached. With tensions high, workers in additional areas like Colorado Springs, Pueblo, and Fort Collins are preparing for potential strike actions in the coming days.

The 77 stores affected by the strike include:
