Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Deputy Bullard is being credited with quick thinking after helping stop a fast-moving grass fire in Centennial before it reached nearby homes. The incident happened at Lookout Park, where body camera footage captured Bullard grabbing a fire extinguisher and working along the fire line in an attempt to slow the flames.
At one point, the fire began pushing toward a wooden fence near the 21500 block of East Crestline Drive. “Hey, I could use another; my extinguisher is out! Hey, come this way, I’m trying to keep it away from the fence line!” Bullard could be heard shouting as he called for a backup tank from another deputy.
Meanwhile, families in the neighborhood scrambled to defend their homes. Video obtained by FOX31 shows residents spraying garden hoses over their fences as flames rose above the wood panels. South Metro Fire Rescue arrived shortly after, quickly working to extinguish the fire before it could cause structural damage.
According to the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, witnesses reported seeing two teenagers lighting fireworks in the park shortly before the fire started. Fire officials warn that recent hot, dry weather has created prime conditions for wildfires, with thick, brown vegetation igniting and spreading rapidly from even the smallest spark.
No homes were damaged in the blaze, and no arrests have been made. “That was too close for comfort,” neighbor Maria said, reflecting the relief felt by many in the community. Authorities continue to investigate the incident while urging residents to be extra cautious during high fire danger days.
