Winston K Walker led “thousands” into Colorado trails, even bridging the gap that “connected people of color with Rocky Mountain trails” in an effort to help break down the walls that kept “underserved communities out of outdoor spaces,” says the Denver Gazette.

“This is historic,” says Allegra “Happy” Haynes, Denver Parks and Recreation executive director, to the outlet. “It was historic in so many ways.”

After four decades of leading excursions from snowshoeing to outdoor experiences, Walker passed away in 2019. Four years later, his loved ones and those at the parks department plan to keep his legacy alive with an unveiling ceremony.

On July 10, the ceremony will reveal the new trailhead, “2.9 mile Winston K. Walker Loop Trail.”

The trail given was visited by Walker often and has scenic views starting at the parking lot of O’Fallon near Evergreen. According to Daily Hikes Near Denver, O’Fallon trails range from 1.3 to 7 miles with a difficulty of easy to moderate.

Whether you’re a newbie or a veteran, it’s recommended to download the trail map prior to taking the 35 minute drive from Denver to Evergreen.

“It’s part of our birthright as Denverites to be part of this outdoor culture,” Haynes said. “And yet we have people who live with this in their backyards and haven’t had this access.”
