A normal trash pickup in Castle Rock turned into a very Colorado moment when a black bear suddenly appeared from inside a garbage truck.

The bear was spotted last Wednesday near a transportation lot where school buses are kept. According to people who witnessed the incident, the bear had apparently climbed into a trash container before it was emptied into the Waste Management truck. Video shows the bear making its way out of the truck before eventually climbing down and running from the area. No injuries were reported.
The timing makes sense for Colorado wildlife. Bears are currently in hyperphagia, the period before hibernation when they spend much of the day searching for food and can consume around 20,000 calories per day. Colorado Parks and Wildlife says trash is one of the biggest things that can attract bears into neighborhoods and encourages residents to keep garbage secured until pickup day.
Fortunately, this bear appears to have escaped its unexpected garbage truck ride safely.
