Denver Plans to Install License Plate Reader Cameras at 60 New Locations

Denver is set to enhance its efforts to combat the rising tide of car thefts by installing more than 100 license plate reader (LPR) cameras across the city. These cameras are expected to significantly aid the Denver Police Department in tracking and recovering stolen vehicles.

The initiative comes in response to a sharp increase in car thefts over the past five years, with reported cases rising from 5,233 in 2019 to a staggering 12,125 last year. To address this alarming trend, the city has released a list of 60 proposed locations for the new cameras, with the total number of installations expected to reach 111 by the end of the summer. The project will cost approximately $339,000.

Denver Police are optimistic that these additional LPR cameras will be a valuable tool in their ongoing struggle against car theft, providing real-time data and tracking capabilities that can lead to quicker recoveries and deterrents for potential thieves.

By strategically placing these cameras throughout the city, Denver aims to create a comprehensive network that enhances public safety and reduces the incidence of car thefts, offering peace of mind to residents and visitors alike.
