Mail Carriers Hailed as Heroes After Saving Families from House Fire
Two United States Postal Service mail carriers are being celebrated for their heroic actions after they alerted two families to a fire that engulfed their homes in Highlands Ranch.
On Thursday, the homes on Woodrose Lane caught fire, but thanks to the quick response of USPS letter carrier Roy Zuniga and trainee Rebecca Koch, both families and their pets were able to escape unharmed.
Zuniga noticed smoke and immediately rushed to warn the families. Knocking loudly on the doors, he alerted them to the imminent danger.
“The entire side of the house was already on fire. I believe we got out within about 90 seconds of not being able to,” said Kyle Warden, who had been asleep with his family when the fire broke out between the two homes. His wife, Melanie, described being in shock as they escaped the blaze.
Zuniga didn’t stop there. He also removed a car filled with gasoline from the burning garage to prevent a further explosion. “It’s instinct—we’re supposed to help people, help your fellow neighbor, and that’s really all I did,” Zuniga said.
Dave Muscianisi, whose home was also affected, expressed his gratitude: “He’s an angel, a godsend; he saved us.” The Muscianisi family later met Zuniga in front of their damaged home to thank him with handshakes and hugs.
The Warden family was equally grateful. Kyle Warden said, “He just did what was right, and he doesn’t want recognition, but he’s going to get it.”
USPS trainee Rebecca Koch, who was with Zuniga when the fire broke out, acted quickly by calling 911. Despite only being on her fourth day on the job, she learned a profound lesson about the critical role mail carriers play in the community. “We see things others may not, so it’s about being vigilant and helping out,” Koch explained.
Although neither Zuniga nor Koch sees themselves as heroes, they hope their actions inspire others to look out for their neighbors in times of need.
The Warden family, expecting their second child, lost their belongings in the fire. A GoFundMe page has been set up to help them recover. South Metro Fire Rescue continues to investigate the cause of the fire.
