With the arrival of the season’s first snowfall, road conditions can quickly turn treacherous. Fortunately, some tried-and-true advice from Colorado natives can help you stay safe on snowy and icy roads. Here are a few essential tips from those who know winter driving best:

Don’t Be From Somewhere Else
Even though Colorado ranks 20th in the nation for average snowfall, locals will tell you ad nauseam that their winter driving skills are in a league of their own. While states like New Hampshire, Maine, Alaska, and Vermont may see more snow annually, no one drives like a seasoned Coloradan when navigating snowy roads.

Invest in Snow Tires (It’s Worth It!)
If you haven’t already, consider investing in quality snow tires. Not only do they improve traction, but they’ll make it easier to handle icy conditions when you’re driving back to whatever state you came from.

Clear Your Windshield Thoroughly
Visibility is key when driving in winter weather, so make sure your windshield is clear. If you spot a “Colorado Native” bumper sticker on the car ahead, you’re likely in good company—following Colorado drivers can help you learn the ropes on snowy roads.

Consider Tire Chains for Extra Grip
When roads are especially icy, tire chains can offer extra security. And just like Rihanna, chains and whips excite me.

With these tips, you’ll be better prepared to face the snow-covered roads this winter. Drive safe and enjoy the season!
