NFL Fans Accuse Refs of Favoring Patrick Mahomes During Broncos–Chiefs Matchup

Story originally reported by Andrew Holleran, The Spun

During Sunday’s AFC West showdown between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs, many NFL fans voiced frustration on social media, claiming that officiating decisions appeared to go in favor of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The high-stakes matchup featured two key penalty calls that wiped out potential game-changing plays for Denver, leading some viewers to accuse officials of “bailing out” Mahomes at critical moments.

According to Andrew Holleran of The Spun, fans became particularly upset after a questionable pass interference call negated what would have been a Broncos pick-six. Later in the game, a block-in-the-back penalty erased a long interception return, prompting even more online backlash. Neither call has been officially ruled incorrect by the NFL, but they sparked intense debate among viewers, with many fans taking to social media to express their belief that the officiating influenced momentum.

Online commenters reacted strongly, insisting the penalties were unnecessary and arguing that Denver should have been ahead on the scoreboard. However, no official statement from the NFL or the officiating crew has indicated wrongdoing, and both penalties were enforced according to the calls made on the field.

The controversial sequence has reignited a familiar discussion among fans — whether star players receive preferential treatment, or if high-pressure moments simply magnify every whistle. As with most officiating debates, opinions remain divided, and the NFL has not announced any post-game review results tied to the calls in question.
