Ball Arena Fans Can Win Game-Day Gear Just by Recycling Aluminum
At Nuggets and Avalanche games, the action isn’t limited to the court or the ice — fans inside Ball Arena can take part in a competition of their own thanks to the Recyclaw, an arcade-style claw machine that only activates when you recycle an aluminum cup or can. Instead of tokens, your “payment” is helping the planet.
Michael Kelley, director of strategic partnerships at Ball Corporation, said the idea is to show fans how simple everyday choices — like recycling aluminum — can make a real environmental impact. By turning the process into a game, Kelley said they’re giving people a fun, hands-on way to learn what responsible recycling looks like.

Now in its third season, the Recyclaw has become a fan favorite. More than 24,000 people have played so far, pulling for prizes ranging from hats and fanny packs to coveted signed jerseys. Kelley said the biggest surprise has been how much kids love it — and how it brings out the inner kid in adults too.
Lines form fast before games as fans eagerly queue up for their chance at merch. Avalanche vice president of marketing, Meredith McClanahan, said the game taps into two things Colorado fans love: fun and competition. Fans can play the Recyclaw, then head right back to the stands to cheer on their team.

Some players say the game requires strategy. Members of Team Aluminum, including Michael Riedy, cheer on hopeful players and offer tips — though not everyone is lucky enough to snag a prize. Others, like frequent player Eli Esperz, keep coming back and occasionally score gear, like the Avalanche beanie he won during his latest try.
Whether players walk away with swag or not, the Recyclaw’s purpose is bigger than prizes. Kelley said the goal is to take the excitement of game day and turn it into better recycling habits at home, helping fans make small changes that benefit the environment.

The Recyclaw is just one part of Ball Arena’s push for sustainability. Fans can also participate in Aluminum Assists, a season-long contest between Nuggets and Avalanche fans to see who can be the most eco-friendly. Participants earn points by recycling and completing challenges, with prizes that include lower-level tickets and exclusive merchandise.
