How Old Do You Have to Be to Not Get IDed in Colorado?

If you’re ordering a drink or picking up a six-pack in Colorado, the golden rule still applies: you must be 21 or older to buy alcohol. Most of the time, that means showing an ID, even if you feel like you’re obviously old enough.

But Colorado law does include an interesting exception. Under state liquor regulations, businesses are allowed to sell alcohol without checking identification if a person reasonably appears to be over the age of 50. In other words, once you look clearly past that threshold, some clerks and servers aren’t required to card you.

That said, many liquor stores, bars, and restaurants still choose to card everyone or follow policies like “Challenge 25,” where anyone who looks under 25 is asked for ID just to be safe. So whether you get carded often depends on the business, the employee, and sometimes just how busy the place is.

And if you suddenly notice you haven’t been carded in a long time… well, let’s just say it might be time for Botox — or perhaps the full Kris Jenner facelift.
