Magicians, Performers, and a Sky Drop? One Candidate’s Vision for 16th Street Is Turning Heads

A Denver mayoral candidate is drawing attention for a bold vision centered on transforming the 16th Street Mall into a high-energy entertainment district inspired by Las Vegas.

Aurelio Martinez, a lifelong Curtis Park resident and retired IT professional, says reviving downtown — especially 16th Street — is the key to bringing life back to the city center. His ideas focus heavily on turning the mall into a destination rather than just a shopping and transit corridor.

Martinez has proposed bringing in street performers, magicians, dancers, and other entertainers to create a lively atmosphere that would attract both tourists and locals. One of his most talked-about concepts is installing a zipline running down 16th Street, along with other attractions like a Hollywood-style Colorado Walk of Stars and even a potential sky-drop experience from Republic Plaza. He believes unique attractions like these would give people a reason to return downtown and help struggling businesses recover.

Beyond entertainment, Martinez has suggested offering rent incentives to help businesses stay in the downtown core and increasing the visible police presence in the area, including establishing a full-scale police district station downtown. He argues that retail and foot traffic once defined 16th Street and should again be the priority.

Martinez has also criticized current city leadership, saying issues like homelessness, safety concerns, and the state of downtown require a new approach. While his campaign centers largely on revitalizing 16th Street, he has also spoken about broader ideas, including long-term plans for homelessness services and workforce programs.

The 2027 mayoral election is still more than a year away, but Martinez says he is running early to build support and promote his vision for what he believes could be a dramatically reimagined downtown Denver.
