If you spent Sunday night yelling “Can you give Denver some credit?” at your television, this one’s for you.
After watching the September 27 Broncos–Rams game, we started a Change.org petition asking NBC to replace Cris Collinsworth on Sunday Night Football.
Do we actually think a petition is going to change NBC’s broadcast booth? Probably not. But we would like Cris himself to hear how frustrated Broncos fans are with commentary that, to us, too often feels tilted against Denver.
Give Denver Credit When It’s Earned
Nobody here is asking Collinsworth to put on an orange jersey and lead a “Let’s Go Broncos” chant.
When Denver makes a mistake, call it out. When the other team makes a great play, explain why it worked. That’s the job.
But when the Broncos make something happen, give them their due, too. Sunday’s broadcast left us feeling like we were listening to more excuses for the opponent than recognition for Denver.
That’s our reaction as fans. And we weren’t the only viewers frustrated. Coverage of the broadcast highlighted complaints about Collinsworth’s praise of Matthew Stafford and the Rams’ offensive line, along with his mentions of the Chiefs during a game between Denver and Los Angeles. sports.yahoo.com
We Know a Petition Isn’t Running NBC
The petition asks NBC to replace Collinsworth with an analyst who gives both teams a fair shake. We know signing it doesn’t mean a moving truck shows up outside the broadcast booth.
The point is to put our frustration somewhere besides the living room.
A national broadcast has fans of both teams watching. Wanting balanced analysis doesn’t mean we can’t handle criticism. It means we want the same standard applied to both sidelines.
We’d like NBC to hear that. More than anything, we’d like Collinsworth to hear it himself.
