Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs has welcomed presidents, hosted Molly Brown and collected some unsettling ghost stories along the way. Opened in 1893 by silver baron Walter Devereux, it later became a World War II Navy hospital. Its basement once housed a naval brig—and, according to the hotel, a morgue.

Among the encounters shared in the hotel’s own collection of ghost stories:
- The bedside visitor: Guests in Room 661 have reportedly seen a woman in a floral dress standing beside their beds. One account describes her repeatedly closing windows while a sick guest rested.
- Voices in an empty room: A security guard and six visitors reportedly heard women talking and a typewriter clicking. When they checked the room, nobody was there.
- The face at the basement window: An employee reported seeing an elderly woman peering through a window in a deep window well. He went to turn on a light, but she disappeared before he could check on her.
These remain reported experiences rather than verified hauntings, but they add another layer to a building with more than 130 years of history.

And yes, you can still stay there. Hotel Colorado welcomes overnight guests today. Explore the property and book a room at HotelColorado.com. Would you be comfortable turning out the lights?
