A new Colorado law that takes effect in September 2021 will require retailers to accept cash from their customers. A violation of the new law is punishable by fines, however, some retailers are exempt from it.

Some businesses refused to accept cash payments for goods and services in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, this move caused hardship for some people who could not pay with a debit or credit card.

The Colorado Revised Statute 11-61-102 requires retailers to accept U.S. currency from their customers when they purchase their goods or services. Federal reserve notes are specifically mentioned in the new law.
