You Can’t Take Your Gun to the Park Anymore

Last night, the Denver City Council decided that you can’t bring guns to the park anymore, even if you conceal them.  The new ordinance passed 9 votes to 3.  This affects all parks within the Denver City Limits as well as the mountain parks they maintain, like Red Rocks.  You are no longer allowed to bring weapons into city owned buildings either, like the National Western Complex.

If you forget to leave it at home, you can keep your firearm in your car.  If it’s not a pistol, it must be unloaded.

There are some exceptions to the ordinance:  If you are Law Enforcement or Military, you can still carry a weapon.   If you are a security guard, you can carry, as long as you have your valid license.   You are also allowed to carry during special events that require weapons, like Stock Show Shooting events.

You can expect some challenges to this ordinance involving the Second Amendment, but as soon as they can get new signage for parks and buildings, it will go into effect.  If you are caught with a weapon in a park, expect to pay up to $999 in fines.
