Living in the Denver Metro Area comes with a lot of perks, like amazing views and easy access to some of the best outdoor activities in the country. But one of the less glamorous aspects of living here is dealing with our intense summers. One way to make life a little easier is by watering your lawn smartly during these hot months. Check out our tips below!

Proper Watering

Want to know how much water your lawn needs in Denver? It’s important that you give it enough, but the wrong amount can cause problems and cost you hundreds of dollars.

Many people in the Denver area believe that you must water your lawn every day. This is not true! But watering too little too often can waste water and does not provide what the grass needs most: Water that is allowed to travel further into the soil to create a deeper root system. This gives you a more resilient lawn that will better survive drought and is healthy enough to have a chance against lawn pests that might try to take up residence there.

Check the soil moisture levels before you water again. If they are still wet, allow them to dry out for an hour or two first so that your plant’s roots can get deep into good quality dirt!

Denver Water has imposed strict water-use restrictions for the metro area of Denver. You are not allowed to water more than three times per week, and between 10 AM – 6 PM; penalties may include fines up to a thousand dollars! Visit Denver Water to learn more

Recommendations

If you live in an area where the weather is hot and dry, then twice weekly watering may be enough. However, if it’s very hot and dry – try adding another watering session for your plants every other week!

Lawns need to have about 1-1.5 inches of water per week in the Denver area, but if you live further away from town then it may be less or more than what’s recommended. You can easily test your sprinkler system for the amount of water it is providing by using a rain gauge (most hardware or garden centers have these)
