A Pack Of Grey Wolves Was Spotted In Colorado For The First Time In Decades

Grey wolf pack. View of a pack of grey wolves (Canis lupus) in the snow. Grey wolves live in packs of five to 15 individuals. They are found throughout the northern regions of the world, and further south in Asia. The pack is led by a dominant couple. Wolves are coursers, that is, they run for hours while hunting. They have been known to cover 60 kilometres in a day. As a pack, they hunt large mammals such as deer, elk, bison and mountain sheep. These animals are too large to be tackled by an individual wolf. Wolves also take smaller animals, such as beavers, in the summer. They also threaten domesticated animals, which has led to their persecution in some areas.

Wolves have been spotted for the second time in a year in northern Colorado, suggesting that a pack of gray wolves might now live in the state, Colorado Parks and Wildlife announced Wednesday just days after a ballot question about reintroducing gray wolves to Colorado was approved for the November ballot.

CPW received an eyewitness report of six wolves traveling together in far northwestern Colorado in October. And last week, an elk carcass was found nearly cleaned of all its meat near Irish Canyon in northwestern Colorado’s Moffat County – just a few miles from the eyewitness sighting, CPW said.
