Pueblo Could Become Colorado’s Next Casino Town Under New Proposal
A proposal being discussed in Pueblo could eventually open the door for casino gambling in another Colorado city, a move supporters believe could help boost tourism and revive downtown.
Casino-style gambling in Colorado is currently limited to Cripple Creek, Black Hawk and Central City, but Pueblo leaders are exploring whether that could change. During a recent episode of Mayor Heather Graham’s podcast, The Mayor’s Mixtape, Graham discussed the possibility of allowing a limited number of casinos in downtown Pueblo as a way to attract visitors, create jobs and bring new nightlife to the area.
Pueblo was once one of Colorado’s largest and most active cities, but in recent years downtown has struggled with business closures and reduced foot traffic. Aside from destinations like the Riverwalk and a handful of restaurants and shops, large portions of the core area have remained quiet, prompting city leaders to look for new ways to spark investment.
Graham emphasized that the idea is not to turn Pueblo into a large-scale gambling destination, but rather to explore whether a small number of casinos could complement existing attractions and help diversify the local economy. City officials say any move toward legalized gambling would require significant legislative steps and voter approval before it could become reality.
