Commerce City Police Tracked an Armed Road Rage Suspect From the Sky Without a Single Car Chase

A terrifying road rage incident in Commerce City recently took a surprising high-tech turn after police used a drone to track down a suspect accused of pulling what appeared to be a handgun on a family of five.

According to police, the frightening encounter unfolded when an angry driver allegedly pointed the weapon at the family before speeding away. The victims were left shaken, unsure if the suspect would come back or hurt someone else on the road.

Instead of launching a dangerous high-speed pursuit, Commerce City Police activated its Drone as First Responder program. From the department’s Real-Time Crime Center, operators quickly launched a drone that scanned the area from above and located the suspect vehicle. Live aerial footage guided officers directly to the car, allowing them to conduct a controlled high-risk traffic stop without a chase.

Police later discovered the suspected “Glock” was actually a BB gun.

The department says the drone program is designed to reduce the risks that come with traditional pursuits. If the suspect had tried to flee again, officers reportedly had spike strips ready while the drone continued tracking the vehicle from the air. That strategy allows police to monitor suspects without forcing officers into dangerous, high-speed situations on busy roads.

Law enforcement agencies across the country have increasingly explored drone technology as a safer alternative during critical incidents. Supporters say the aerial perspective gives officers more time, better coordination, and reduces the chances of crashes or injuries during pursuits.

In this case, the technology helped police safely arrest the suspect while allowing the family involved to avoid an even more dangerous outcome.
