Abstract Denver, founded by Dave Roggeman and Aaron Cohrs, has become a significant player in Colorado’s streetwear and art scene. What began as Indy Ink in 2002, a small screen-printing operation, evolved into Abstract Denver—a boutique that brings local culture, art, and history to life through fashion. Beyond simply offering stylish apparel, Abstract Denver specializes in crafting designs that tell the unique stories of Colorado’s past, blending art with history to create something truly special.

One such design pays tribute to Roger the Elephant, a real-life elephant who famously escaped from the Denver Zoo in 1963. Roger’s unexpected adventure through the city became an unforgettable moment in Denver’s history. He was eventually tranquilized and returned to the zoo, but his wild day out became the stuff of legend. Abstract Denver’s design captures the excitement and charm of Roger’s adventure, allowing wearers to carry this quirky piece of Denver’s past with them.

Another significant design focuses on the notorious Granby Killdozer incident of 2004. Marvin Heemeyer, fueled by personal grievances, went on a rampage in a fortified bulldozer that he had meticulously transformed into an armored vehicle. He wreaked havoc on the town of Granby before meeting his end, and the event has since become legendary in Colorado. Abstract Denver’s bold design memorializes this intense and shocking moment in local history, offering a wearable piece of storytelling.

But it’s not just real-life events that inspire Abstract Denver’s designs—Colorado’s folklore plays a huge role, too. One of their standout designs is based on the legend of the Slide-Rock Bolter, a mythical beast said to live in the steep mountain slopes of Colorado. Unlike Bigfoot, the Slide-Rock Bolter is described as a massive, whale-like creature with a hooked tail, capable of causing avalanches as it slides down mountainsides to snatch up unsuspecting victims. This lesser-known Colorado legend is captured perfectly in Abstract Denver’s design, combining mystery, adventure, and the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains.

Abstract Denver: A Brand Rooted in Local Art and Community

Dave and Aaron’s passion for storytelling extends beyond just historical events. They consistently collaborate with local artists to create unique, limited-edition designs that showcase Colorado’s rich culture. These partnerships give local artists a platform to share their work while allowing Abstract Denver to stay rooted in the community.

Abstract Denver’s impact can be seen in their brick-and-mortar stores, with their flagship location in the heart of Denver’s Art District on Santa Fe, and additional locations in Edgewater and Aurora. These storefronts not only feature their signature designs but also serve as community spaces, hosting monthly art events and collaborations with local creatives. Abstract is more than just a retail store—it’s a cultural hub where fashion, art, and storytelling come together.

In addition to their physical locations, Abstract Denver has a robust online presence, where fans can browse their exclusive apparel, shop new collections, and stay updated on upcoming collaborations. The online store also showcases their artist partnerships and offers easy access to their custom art pieces and limited-edition streetwear.

Abstract Denver continues to be a shining example of how fashion can tell stories, bringing Colorado’s history and legends to life one shirt at a time.
