Donkey Derby Days Returns to Cripple Creek!

Calling all donkey fans! The beloved Donkey Derby Days festival returns to Cripple Creek, Colorado this summer, from June 28th to 30th, 2024. This free, three-day event promises fun for the whole family, celebrating the town’s rich history and its famous resident donkey herd.

A Race Through Time

Donkey Derby Days has been a Cripple Creek tradition for over 80 years. Inspired by the town’s donkeys, believed to be descendants of those used during the Gold Rush, the festival features exciting donkey races. Watch these furry athletes compete and cheer them on to victory!

More Than Just Races

There’s more to Donkey Derby Days than just racing. The festival offers a variety of activities, including:

  • Live Music: Enjoy toe-tapping tunes throughout the weekend.
  • Kids Zone: Keep the little ones entertained with fun games and activities.
  • Vendors: Browse unique crafts and merchandise from local vendors.
  • Food & Drinks: Savor delicious food and beverages from various vendors.
  • Parade: Don’t miss the colorful parade on Saturday!
  • Historical Reenactments: Travel back in time with historical reenactments at Pocket Park.
  • Beer Gardens: Relax and unwind with a refreshing drink at the beer gardens (open from 11 AM to 10 PM on Saturday and 11 AM to 5 PM on Sunday).

A Legacy Lives On

Donkey Derby Days began in the 1930s as a way to attract visitors to Cripple Creek. Local businessman Charley Lehew’s vision has become a beloved tradition, celebrating the town’s unique heritage and ensuring the continued care of its resident donkey herd.
