A bear was spotted tackling the Manitou Incline on Sunday evening, surprising hikers near the summit of the popular Colorado trail. Steve Stermer captured the encounter on video around 7 p.m., just 100 steps from the top. While the bear appeared more interested in climbing than causing trouble, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) used the sighting as a reminder for everyone to stay “bear aware” while recreating in the mountains.

CPW advises that if you do come face-to-face with a bear, remain calm, don’t run, and give the animal a clear path to escape. They also emphasize prevention—like securing trash, taking down bird feeders in bear season (April 15–Nov. 15), and keeping campsites and outdoor areas clean to avoid attracting curious wildlife. Residents and hikers are encouraged to stay alert and follow best practices to avoid unwanted bear encounters.

With summer hiking season in full swing, bear sightings are likely to increase—especially in high-traffic spots like the Incline. So next time you lace up for a climb, remember: you’re not the only one hitting the trail.
