Denver’s Giving Away Free Mulch… Time to Find Out Who Your Real Friends With Trucks Are
Denver is giving residents a chance to save some money on yard work this weekend with its annual free mulch and compost giveaway set for Saturday, May 2. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., people can pick up dig-your-own mulch at multiple locations across the city, using material made from recycled Christmas trees collected earlier this year through Denver’s Treecycle program.
Free mulch will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at these locations:
- Cherry Creek Transfer Station — 7301 E. Jewell Ave.
- Havana Nursery — 10450 Smith Rd. (includes loader service for trucks and small trailers)
- Denver Central Platte Campus — 2000 W. 3rd Ave.
- Sloan’s Lake Park (north parking lot) — N. Yates St. & W. Byron Pl.
In addition to mulch, a limited amount of compost made from food scraps and yard waste will be available at the Central Platte Campus, but residents must register in advance to claim it.
City officials are reminding people to come prepared with their own shovels, rakes, bags, or containers for loading. Anyone using a truck or trailer should also bring a tarp to secure their load. For compost pickup, residents will need a 5-gallon bucket, a shovel, and proof of Denver residency.
The giveaway is open to Denver residents only, and commercial vehicles are not allowed. Organizers recommend arriving early, as supplies can run out quickly.
