Broncos Announce Plans for New Stadium at Burnham Yard

The Denver Broncos are officially moving forward with plans for a new, privately funded stadium at Burnham Yard, the 58-acre former railyard just a mile from the team’s current home. Announced alongside Mayor Mike Johnston and Governor Jared Polis, the project will feature a retractable roof, opening the door for Denver to host marquee events like the Super Bowl and Final Four. The move comes more than two decades after Empower Field at Mile High opened in 2001 to replace the original Mile High Stadium.

The Walton-Penner Ownership Group will cover the cost of the multi-billion-dollar development, which also includes cleaning up land polluted by 150 years of rail operations. City leaders say the project will spark new opportunities for housing, parks, retail, and community amenities in a largely undeveloped part of Denver. Still, Burnham Yard’s redevelopment has stirred debate after historic structures tied to Denver’s diverse workforce were demolished earlier this year.

Denver Water will relocate parts of its operations complex to make way for the stadium, with all costs covered by the Broncos. Once the team vacates Empower Field in 2030, the 80-acre site will return to the city for future redevelopment. Planning for Burnham Yard is expected to begin in 2026, setting the stage for what officials call a transformational project in Denver’s urban core.
