6 Injured, Including 3 Children, in Fiery Crash Involving Police Cruiser at Alameda and Buckley

A fiery multi-vehicle crash shut down the intersection of Alameda Avenue and Buckley Road in Aurora on Monday night, injuring six people and prompting a large emergency response. The collision, which occurred around 8:25 p.m., involved four vehicles — one of them a police cruiser. The officer involved was uninjured, according to the Aurora Police Department.

One of the vehicles, an electric car, caught fire following the crash. Aurora Fire Rescue said the fire was caused by a damaged battery that went into “thermal runaway.” To avoid hazardous runoff, firefighters opted to let the fire burn out on its own. Flames and smoke were still visible at the scene more than 45 minutes later, though no nearby structures were threatened. A hazmat team from South Metro Fire Rescue also responded to the scene.

Among the injured were three adults and three children. One adult sustained life-threatening injuries, while the others had injuries that were mostly minor, according to police. The crash took place near the western edge of Buckley Space Force Base.

The intersection remained closed as investigators worked to determine the cause of the crash. Aurora’s traffic unit is leading the investigation.
