Boulder Police Rescue Toddler From Balcony, Arrest Father the Following Night

A late-night call about a little girl crying for help from a Boulder apartment balcony ended with police rescuing the child — and eventually tracking her father down at a local bar.

Officers were called to the home around 10:30 p.m. on July 28 after someone spotted the toddler outside on a second-floor balcony wearing only a diaper. With the apartment locked and no adult answering the door, officers improvised a way to reach her, using a patrol vehicle and climbing over a fence to get to the balcony.

The girl was not injured, but police said they found marijuana and drug-related items in an area she could easily access.

Police managed to reach her father by phone, and he reportedly said he had left the apartment while his daughter was sleeping so he could get something to eat. Despite learning that officers were at his home with his child, police said he would not come back.

That left officers temporarily playing the role of caregivers. They changed the girl’s diaper, found clothes for her and brought her to the police station while they worked to locate another parent. Her mother was eventually contacted, and officers drove the toddler to her home in Denver.

The search for the father continued into the following night. Police said they figured out where he was likely to be and found him at a bar. When he was taken into custody, officers allegedly discovered roughly 15 grams of fentanyl and a significant amount of cash in his possession.

Police have not publicly identified the father or detailed the charges against him.

Boulder Police said they’re thankful the little girl escaped the ordeal without being hurt and hope what sticks with her is the kindness shown by the people who came to her rescue.
