The tiny town of Moffat is considering changing its name to ‘Kush’, a reference to the local cannabis industry. The town’s board of trustees started discussions on proposals at this week’s meetings.

So, why the name ‘Kush’? It has become slang for marijuana. Although, it actually refers to a landrace strain of marijuana originating from the Amu Darya River Valley, located on the border between Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Many people in and out of America have come to associate marijuana with Colorado. We seem to be synonymous. Knowing that the town is hoping that could draw tourists in, the town could capitalize on this marketing avenue. They are hoping to become the new Napa Valley of the Weed Industry.

With Moffat home to many cannabis growers and a booming industry, it’s also located in one of the state’s popular tourism regions. Found on the northern edge of the San Luis Valley and near the Great Sand Dunes National Park, the area already receives heavy traffic and will likely attract fans of the plant to check out the area as they’re passing through.

But, not everyone is happy about these decisions. The population of roughly 120 people is divided. For although exponential growth and change can bring many great things, such as funding for schools, roads, and housing development; these things do not align with everyone’s values. And some people would rather not have this industry at their doorsteps. One thing is for sure, the world is changing. Maybe Colorado’s map is too. What do you think?
