You Won’t Believe Which Colorado City Is the Most Overweight
Colorado is famous for being one of the fittest states in America. Boulder County actually has the lowest obesity rate in the entire country, while Gunnison and Pitkin counties also rank among the healthiest places to live. Fitness is part of Colorado’s culture — from hiking trails to ski slopes, staying active is just a way of life here.
But not every corner of the state shares that same reputation. According to new research from WalletHub, two Colorado cities landed on the list of America’s 100 most overweight and obese cities. Denver ranked 98th, and Colorado Springs came in at 93rd. While that’s still much healthier than most of the nation, it shows even fitness-focused Colorado has areas where healthy living is harder to maintain.
Colorado Springs ranked worst in the “food and fitness” category — a score that takes into account diet, physical activity, and access to health resources.
Researchers also identified Colorado’s most obese counties, showing where the challenges are greatest across the state.
Colorado’s Most Obese Counties
Although Colorado is the fittest state in the nation, here are the counties that struggle most with obesity:
#10 – Las Animas
29% of adults in Las Animas County are considered obese.
#9 – Fremont
Fremont is tied with Las Animas at 29%.
#8 – Conejos
30% of Conejos County’s population is obese.
#7 – Crowley
Crowley County has a population of 6,012. 1,803 of those people are classified as obese.
#6 – Costilla
30% of Costilla’s population would be considered obese. Costilla is tied with Crowley and Conejos.
#5 – Lincoln
31% of Lincoln County residents are overweight.
#4 – Otero
32% of Otero County residents are overweight. But Otero is tied with another county in Colorado.
#3 – Weld
Weld County has over 350,000 residents. 112,000, or 32% of those residents, are obese.
#2 – Bent
33% of Bent County’s population is obese.
#1 – Morgan
Morgan County is the most obese county in Colorado at 34%.
Despite these numbers, Colorado still leads the nation in fitness and outdoor lifestyle. For many residents, it’s proof that while health challenges exist, the state’s active spirit remains stronger than ever.
