Denver Police Crack Down on Expired Tags with Month-Long Enforcement Sweep
Denver drivers, take note — police are cracking down on expired tags. Starting November 15, the Denver Police Department will launch a one-month “targeted enforcement” campaign focused on expired vehicle registrations and temporary license plates. The department says the effort comes after numerous community complaints about unregistered and expired vehicles across the city. This will be DPD’s fifth enforcement wave since July 2024. During the last campaign, officers issued more than 650 citations in just one month.
Drivers caught with expired registrations or tags could face a $95 fine on top of renewal fees. DPD is urging vehicle owners to update their plates and registrations promptly, reminding residents that while regular registrations include a 30-day grace period after expiration, temporary plates do not. To make things easier, renewals can be done online or at kiosks throughout Denver, though new vehicle registrations still require an in-person visit to the DMV.
The department also confirmed it will temporarily ease its usual policy limiting “low-level” traffic stops during this focused enforcement effort. DPD says the goal isn’t just to ticket drivers but to encourage compliance and address neighborhood concerns about safety and accountability on city streets.
