Denver’s Airport Makes Top 10 for Most Guns Found at Security in 2024

You’d think that by now, everyone would know you can’t bring firearms to the airport, but apparently, some passengers missed the memo.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) recently released its annual report on firearms discovered during airport screenings, and Denver International Airport (DIA) ranked in the top ten for the number of firearms found at security checkpoints in 2024. As one of the busiest airports in the world, it’s not surprising that some travelers attempt to carry more than just their luggage.

Here’s a look at the airports with the most guns found during security checks in 2024:

Top Airports for Firearm Discoveries in 2024:

  1. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport – 440 firearms
  2. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport – 390 firearms
  3. George Bush Intercontinental Airport – 272 firearms
  4. Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport – 247 firearms
  5. Nashville International Airport – 188 firearms
  6. Denver International Airport – 166 firearms
  7. Orlando International Airport – 162 firearms
  8. Los Angeles International Airport – 154 firearms
  9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport – 148 firearms
  10. Miami International Airport – 142 firearms

In 2024, TSA discovered 166 firearms in carry-on luggage at DIA’s three security checkpoints, down from 178 in 2023 but still over 100 firearms for the year. Of those found, 92% were loaded. Given that TSA screened over 24 million passengers at DIA in 2024, this equates to one firearm discovery for every 148,490 travelers.

While these numbers are high, DIA is not the only airport seeing passengers try to sneak guns past security. Nationwide, TSA found 6,678 firearms during screenings of approximately 904 million passengers, or about 7.39 firearms per million travelers.

What Happens If You’re Caught With a Firearm at TSA?

TSA is serious about keeping firearms off planes. Passengers caught with a gun in their carry-on face potential fines of up to $13,910, depending on the situation.

How to Properly Travel With a Firearm

If you need to travel with a firearm, there are strict guidelines to follow:

  • Check your firearm: Guns must be packed in your checked luggage or a separate case.
  • Use a hard-sided, locked case: Make sure the case is padded inside.
  • Unload the gun: Ensure the firearm is completely unloaded before packing it.
  • Separate ammunition: Store ammunition in a separate, secure location from the firearm.
  • Lock the case: The case must be locked for safety.
  • Plan ahead: Research and follow your airline’s specific rules for traveling with firearms.

By following these guidelines, you can legally and safely travel with your firearm. Just remember—don’t bring it through TSA in your carry-on.
