Denver Preschoolers Donate Over 14,000 Canned Goods to Local Nonprofits

Small hands are making a big impact in the Denver metro area as preschoolers from Primrose Schools donated 14,420 canned goods and raised $18,200 for local nonprofits during the annual Caring and Giving Food Drive.

A Lesson in Giving Back

Primrose Schools, a chain of early education schools and daycares, incorporates community service into its curriculum for 3- and 4-year-olds. Each November, children at the 17 Primrose locations in the Denver metro area are encouraged to bring in canned goods to support local nonprofits aiding those in need. Older students are also encouraged to do chores at home to earn money to purchase and donate additional canned goods.

“As part of our curriculum-based Caring and Giving Food Drive, we focus on fostering a sense of belonging and making a positive difference in the communities we serve,” said Jo Kirchner, CEO of Primrose Schools, in a statement. “These hands-on, experiential lessons of service help children understand the joy of giving and build strong character.”

A History of Helping

This initiative is part of a broader effort by Primrose Schools to address food insecurity in local communities. Since 2019, the program has donated nearly 1.5 million food items to nonprofits across the country.

This year’s contributions supported organizations such as Bienvenidos Food Bank, Broomfield FISH, Castle Rock Food Drive, Colorado Food Share, Emergency Family Assistance Association, Erie Food Bank, and Food Bank of the Rockies.

Building Character Through Service

“Experiencing the joy of giving without expectation of receiving anything in return helps children build strong character and positively shapes who they become,” said Dr. Amy Jackson, chief early learning officer at Primrose Schools.

The Caring and Giving Food Drive exemplifies how even the youngest members of the community can make a meaningful impact, fostering empathy and compassion while helping neighbors in need. Through these efforts, Primrose Schools is teaching children the importance of service, kindness, and giving back—one canned good at a time.
