Mike Johnston was appointed the 46th mayor of the Mile High City, and he has big plans for the city. As of this morning, Johnston held a conference, sharing his actions to combat homelessness.

“This is our commitment on day one to say we hear you we agree with you and we are ready to put all of our energy and effort in the city behind delivering a solution for this,” Johnston said. “Until we can fundamentally transform the way the city feels for those who are unhoused, struggling to get their lives back together, and for those folks who are trying to launch a business or build their community in a way that they want to both make sure people have the compassionate support they need and we have a city that can thrive for all of us.”

As the conference continues, KDVR will provide live updates on his plans in detail here.

During his sworn-in ceremony, Johnston was not only optimistic but spoke in the manner of creating a better Denver. With his plans of cleaning up the homeless population to making Denver a more affordable place to live, Johnston wants to do a lot, and according to CBS, “he expects a lot of help from those who call Denver Home.”

“The essence of democracy is that it calls on our ability to do something that feels unnatural. To love those who are different from us. To believe in them, to work with them, to sacrifice for them, to deliver for them. That is our dream of Denver. That is our promise to our people; that is our pledge to each other. That is how we put our arms around those stuck in a cycle of hurt, and it is how we pull this city back into a cycle of hope. It is how we dream, serve, and deliver Denver as America’s best city. Now, let’s get to work!” he said.

His vision includes 25,000 permanently affordable housing units, hiring 200 more first responders, remodeling the 16th Street Mall, and more.
