18 Rabbits Abandoned by Dumpster in Golden; Suspect Facing Animal Cruelty Charges

A suspect is facing 18 counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty after authorities in Jefferson County discovered a group of abandoned domestic rabbits near a dumpster in Golden earlier this May. According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the rabbits included a mix of adults, juveniles, and a mother with seven newborn babies—all left west of the West Pleasant View neighborhood.

Thanks to swift community support and shared tips, deputies quickly identified the suspect behind the act. “Rabbit Justice: Delivered!” the sheriff’s office posted on social media, thanking residents for helping crack the case.

While the legal process moves forward, there’s good news for animal lovers: several of the rescued rabbits—now safe and cared for—are available for adoption through the Foothills Animal Shelter.
