Durango Police “Arrest” Red Kangaroo After a Hoppy Pursuit

In an unusual turn of events, Durango police officers recently found themselves in a “hop” pursuit down Main Street as they worked to wrangle a red kangaroo that had escaped its owner. While residents of Durango are banned from owning exotic animals like monkeys, tigers, elephants, and bears, kangaroos remain legal to keep as pets.

This particular joey had wandered away from home, leading officers on a lighthearted chase to ensure its safe capture and return. Three officers were involved in the successful “arrest,” bringing the adventurous marsupial back to its relieved owner.

The Durango Police Department didn’t miss a chance to inject some humor into the incident, sharing on Facebook: “We let him off with a warning but did talk with him about the dangers of wandering aimlessly in the street and curfews for those under 18.” The post even prompted some playful brainstorming on how the department could incorporate a kangaroo into its ranks. “Emotional support kangaroo? Drug-sniffing kangaroo? The possibilities are endless,” they joked.

While the red kangaroo, native to Australia, can grow up to 7 feet tall, this particular one was still a young joey. The incident quickly charmed the community, with residents dubbing the little guy “The Durangaroo” and wondering if they could have their own cuddle session with the cute escapee.

For now, the Durangaroo is safely back at home, but it left many wondering what other delightful surprises Durango’s streets might bring.
