It’s New Bill season here in Colorado, and up on Deck is SB23-200.  Senator Faith Winter and Representative Meg Froehlich have a new bill pushing through the Capitol that would make it easier for Law enforcement to put up cameras all over town.  Right now, Police can only set up speed trap vans near Schools, Parks, and in Residential areas.  The vans also have to have an occupant, and have signs notifying drivers that Speed Cameras may be in use.  The new bill would let police set up Speed Enforcement Zones.  The zones would be clearly marked, but they could have as many unmanned cameras within the zone as they wish.  For example, they could declare all of Federal BLVD a Speed Enforcement Zone, and put a camera on every block.

The lawmakers say that this is not a way to increase revenue, as the proposed ticket fine is only $40.  They just want people to slow down, and they think this form of 24/7 monitoring will do that.  The bill also addresses some other minor issues.  Towns and Cities that issue tickets like these, and red light cameras will have only 30 days to issue the citation.  As of now, Red Light Cameras get up to 90 Days.
