After the Denver Broncos’ 28-14 win over the Carolina Panthers, a heated exchange between Panthers cornerback Jaycee Horn and Broncos coach Sean Payton was captured by CBS cameras. Payton, who spent 16 years coaching in the NFC South with the New Orleans Saints, is no stranger to Carolina, and it appeared he wanted to send a message to his old rivals. In the fourth quarter, while leading 28-7, Payton called a fake field goal attempt and later a trick play that involved wide receiver Courtland Sutton throwing a deep pass to fullback Michael Burton. The play ultimately resulted in a turnover after Sutton fumbled.
Jaycee Horn, seemingly unhappy with the call, confronted Payton after the game. When asked about the incident, Payton downplayed the exchange, saying, “I coached his father, and so I was yelling back at him… I enjoyed coaching his father and I like Jaycee. He’s a good player.” Horn’s father, Joe Horn, played for the Saints from 2000-2006, and Payton coached him during his first season in New Orleans.
