FBI Warns Colorado Shoppers: Beware of These Two Holiday Scams

The holiday season brings joy and excitement, but it’s also a prime time for cybercriminals. With online shopping in full swing, Colorado residents are urged to take extra precautions to protect their personal information. The FBI has issued a nationwide warning about two prevalent scams that are particularly active this year.

Scam #1: Holiday Romance Scams

While the holidays are a time for celebration and family gatherings, they can feel lonely for singles—and scammers know it. Romance scams spike during this season, targeting individuals on dating websites and social media platforms.

The FBI warns that romance scammers often move quickly to establish a connection and fast-track a relationship. Once trust is built, they fabricate emergencies and ask for money. Be cautious this holiday season if someone you’ve just met online begins asking for financial assistance or personal information.

Scam #2: Holiday Ransomware

In the rush of holiday shopping, it’s easy to fall victim to ransomware scams. These occur when malware infiltrates your device, locking you out and demanding payment to restore access. This can lead to the loss of files, ruined devices, and stolen personal information.

The FBI advises taking these steps to protect yourself:

  • Keep your security software updated.
  • Avoid clicking on unknown links or visiting suspicious websites.
  • Be wary of emails urging you to click on URLs with a sense of urgency.

If you believe you’ve been targeted or victimized by an online scam, report the incident to the FBI at www.ic3.gov.

Stay Safe This Holiday Season

As you enjoy the festivities, remain vigilant while shopping online or connecting with new people. Taking these precautions can help ensure a safe and happy holiday season for you and your loved ones.
