Aurora Police Crack Down on Shoplifting Ring, Uncover Violent Suspects

The Aurora Police Department (APD) has intensified its efforts against shoplifting, uncovering ties to violent offenders during sting operations. A recent crackdown at the Town Center at Aurora exposed a shoplifting ring responsible for nearly $100,000 in losses, bringing relief to local retailers and employees.

Uncovering the Crime Ring

The operation began when Victoria’s Secret’s regional loss prevention manager reported six theft incidents at the mall, totaling $10,000 in stolen merchandise. Officers Chris Ozaluk and Kevin Manley, stationed at the mall’s police substation, took charge of the investigation.

Using surveillance footage and reports, officers identified a pattern of thefts typically occurring on Thursdays. They set up a covert operation with Manley concealed inside the store and Ozaluk stationed nearby. Their strategy proved successful, leading to the arrest of three suspects in one morning.

“The group thought we were gone, so additional suspects returned, and we arrested more people,” Ozaluk explained. Ultimately, the operation resulted in four arrests that day and the identification of seven suspects linked to a broader theft network.

Organized Retail Crime Revealed

The investigation uncovered connections to 98 other cases across Aurora, with significant activity at both the Town Center and Southlands malls. One suspect alone was tied to 25 theft cases.

“This group caused nearly $100,000 in losses,” Ozaluk said. “We were able to link them to open cases citywide.”

Impact on the Community

The arrests have brought much-needed relief to retailers and employees, who often feel unsafe confronting shoplifters. With the police substation operational for three years, officers can respond to incidents within seconds, fostering a safer environment.

“Victoria’s Secret reported their thefts have almost stopped entirely,” Manley said.

Beyond enforcement, officers also focus on community engagement. “We play table tennis in the food court, hand out stickers, and connect with kids,” Manley added. “We want people to see the human side of law enforcement.”

A Call for Vigilance

The success of this operation underscores the importance of collaboration between retailers and law enforcement. APD encourages anyone needing assistance at the mall to contact their substation or notify mall security immediately.

Thanks to the swift action of APD, shoplifting incidents have significantly decreased, restoring a sense of security for both businesses and shoppers.
