A courageous woman rushed back into her burning home on Sunday to save her family’s dog, Moses, according to Aurora Fire Rescue (AFR). Despite the danger, the woman and the dog safely escaped, along with the rest of her family.

The fire broke out at a two-story townhouse near East Mansfield Avenue and East Loyola Drive around 2:20 p.m. The family discovered the fire after returning home and hearing their smoke alarms blaring. In the chaos, the woman re-entered the home to rescue Moses before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, which had spread to the second floor. Crews thoroughly searched the home but found no one trapped inside. The fire also breached the walls of an adjacent unit, but everyone in both homes safely evacuated.

While the woman was treated on the scene for smoke inhalation, she declined further medical attention. Moses was unharmed.

Aurora Fire Rescue is investigating the cause of the fire and issued a strong reminder about the dangers of re-entering burning buildings. “Fire can spread rapidly and is unpredictable,” AFR stated. They emphasized that anyone missing or trapped should be reported to 911 dispatchers immediately, and under no circumstances should anyone attempt to re-enter a fire.

Thanks to the woman’s bravery and quick action by firefighters, this potentially tragic event had a safe outcome.
