Hike, Swim, Repeat: Colorado’s Turquoise Lake Trail Is Peak Summer Vibes

If you’re chasing the ultimate Colorado summer day—one with mountain views, a cool swim, and fresh alpine air—look no further than the Turquoise Lake Trail near Leadville. This scenic, 12-mile out-and-back trail hugs the shoreline of Turquoise Lake, a stunning man-made reservoir that sits at nearly 10,000 feet above sea level. While the name might make you think of shimmering blue waters (which it has), the lake actually gets its name from a former turquoise mine on the site.

Built in 1967, Turquoise Lake has become a playground for outdoor lovers year-round. In the summer, it’s all about hiking, biking, swimming, and boating. The Turquoise Lake Trail is moderately challenging, with only 475 feet of elevation gain, winding through meadows and pine forests with constant lake and mountain views. It’s a great pick for families, with shaded spots to rest and relatively flat terrain. For those on two wheels, there’s a 12-mile singletrack and a separate 15-mile paved loop for road bikers.

Want to cool off after the hike? There’s a sandy beach near the Belle of Colorado Campground that’s perfect for a post-trail plunge—but fair warning: even in July, that water’s mountain cold. Stick around for sunset; the view of the sun dipping behind the peaks will make you forget all about your sore legs. And if you’re not ready to leave, pitch a tent at one of the many nearby campgrounds (reservations recommended), or head back into Leadville for a cozy night at the historic Delaware Hotel.
