Driver Found Guilty in Tragic Death of Teen Cyclist Magnus White

A Boulder County jury has found Yeva Smilianska guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving in the death of 17-year-old Magnus White, a rising star in the cycling world who was struck and killed while training last summer. The verdict came late Friday night after a weeklong trial and seven hours of jury deliberations.

White, a member of the USA Cycling National Team, was riding his bike on July 29, 2023, preparing for an international competition when he was hit by Smilianska’s vehicle. He was thrown from his bike and transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. His sudden death sent shockwaves through the cycling community and prompted calls for increased safety measures for cyclists on Colorado’s roads.

Smilianska, who had pleaded not guilty to vehicular homicide, faced the possibility of being convicted of a lesser charge, such as careless driving causing death. However, the jury determined that her actions rose to the level of recklessness, leading to a more serious conviction. Sentencing is scheduled for June 13, when Smilianska could face significant jail time for the fatal crash.

The case has drawn attention to road safety for cyclists and the legal accountability of drivers involved in fatal collisions. Friends and family of Magnus White, along with cycling advocates, hope the verdict brings a sense of justice and helps ensure safer conditions for all riders.
