In a tense early morning incident, the Colorado Supreme Court was rocked by a lone intruder who broke into the building and opened fire. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the episode served as a stark reminder of the heightened tensions surrounding the court’s recent decision to remove former President Donald Trump from the 2024 ballot.

“CSP and DPD are treating this incident seriously, but at this time, it is believed that this is not associated with previous threats to the Colorado Supreme Court justices,” Colorado State Patrol said in a news release

The details remain murky, but authorities pieced together a chilling narrative.

Around 1:15 am, a two-vehicle crash near the courthouse at 13th Avenue and Lincoln Street unfolded into a more ominous sequence. One driver, wielding a handgun, shattered a window of the Judicial Center and gained entry. Inside, the suspect encountered an unarmed security guard, taking the guard’s keys at gunpoint. With access to the building, the individual proceeded to higher floors, discharging more rounds, according to the press release.

The man shot at police, but they didn’t fire back, according to DPD. The suspect, whose identity hasn’t been released, has surrendered to police.
