Massive Glade Plug-In Installation Draws Attention Along I-70 Near Purina Facility

Drivers along I-70 were met with an unusual sight early Wednesday morning as crews began installing what is being described as the world’s largest plug-in air freshener at the Purina pet food production facility. The initiative is part of a highly coordinated promotional campaign by S. C. Johnson & Son, the parent company of Glade, aimed at showcasing the power and reach of its latest scent technology.

According to project organizers, the oversized Glade Plug-In diffuser—engineered at a scale never before attempted—was transported and positioned using a heavy-lift helicopter typically reserved for military or large-scale infrastructure operations. Witnesses described a choreographed sequence of aerial maneuvers and ground coordination, with crews guiding the massive device into place against the exterior of the Nestlé Purina PetCare facility just after sunrise.

The installation comes in response to long-standing public complaints about strong odors associated with pet food manufacturing in the area. While officials have consistently maintained that emissions from the plant are within regulatory standards, the smell has remained a topic of discussion among commuters and nearby residents for years.

Representatives from S. C. Johnson say the project is both symbolic and functional. “This is about demonstrating how scent can transform an environment at any scale,” a spokesperson said. “We wanted to take something people are familiar with—our Glade Plug-Ins—and show it in a way that’s impossible to ignore.”

The custom-built unit reportedly houses an advanced dispersion system designed to release fragrance over a wide radius, though company officials declined to specify technical details. Early reports suggest the scent being deployed is a new release from Glade’s upcoming product line, expected to hit retail shelves later this year.

Traffic slowed throughout the morning as onlookers gathered along nearby overpasses and frontage roads to watch the operation unfold. Local authorities briefly monitored the area to manage congestion but confirmed that no road closures were required.

While the long-term effectiveness of the installation remains to be seen, the spectacle itself has already generated significant buzz—both for its ambitious scale and its unconventional approach to addressing a familiar local issue.
