Authorities in Mesa County are investigating a possible homicide after a gruesome discovery in a home near Denver. On Friday, January 12th, a person responding to a social media post about free items stumbled upon a chilling sight: a bag containing human remains, later confirmed to be a severed human head, inside a deep freezer.

The property, located on Pinyon Road in The Pinery, had recently been sold. According to a statement from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, “persons at the address” found the remains while cleaning out the house. While identities remain unconfirmed, a neighbor reported that a mother and son previously resided there, with the father having passed away in 2021.

Adding to the mystery, the former occupants reportedly moved out and sold the house on the same day. The new homeowners, unaware of the dark secret in their fridge, posted online offering leftover belongings, including the aforementioned freezer. A recipient of the appliance made the grim discovery while cleaning it out.

The Mesa County Coroner’s Office released the following statement:

“The autopsy by the Mesa County Coroner’s Office occurred yesterday and has confirmed the human remains found at the address on Pinyon Avenue on January 12, 2024, are a human head and human hands.

At this time, we have no other definitive answers until further testing can be completed.  These types of tests take a significant amount of time, and again, we ask for patience from the public as this investigation continues.

A thorough and detailed investigation is the top priority of the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office.  Our hope is to positively identify the victim while remaining respectful of the victim and the victim’s family.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office at 970-244-3266.
